Use of EO Data in Search and Rescue

For this live event on February 27th 2023 we hosted Benjamin Kuo, a technology enthusiast, rose to fame in April 2021 when he used EO data to successfully geolocate a missing hiker who had gotten lost in the Angeles Forest, sending the search and rescue team to the right location, making it possible to get the hiker home safe and sound. The entire process took him less than 15 minutes. This was neither his first nor his last similar experience. Just about anyone can do this, with the use of openly accessible tools and data. Ben shared his experience and some funny stories to make it easier for you to do the same. General agenda:

  • The potential of using EO data for search and rescue operations
  • Various types of imagery and how they can be used - from commercial Airbus, Maxar and Capella data to the open Sentinel data
  • The good, the bad and the ugly of working with data
  • Examples of satellite data that may have been useful in search and rescue operations in recent years

Arctic Wildfires - What can (and can’t) we know from satellites?

Satellite data are extremely useful in monitoring wildfire activity, including in the Arctic. Predictions over a decade ago suggested a ‘fire invasion’ at higher latitudes. In this webinar held on April 6th 2023 we explored, whether and how this can actually be seen through the EO data. We discussed “zombie fires’ that seem to survive the winter in peat soils and re-emerge the next year to ignite new fires, as well as the missing parts of the current EO data offering to ensure consistent monitoring. Watch the webinar to learn about the role of climate change in the occurrence of these fires and how this process might further drive climate change.

The Arctic Wildfires topic was presented by our special guest Dr Thomas Smith, Associate Professor in Environmental Geography at the Department of Geography & Environment at the London School of Economics. Tom’s presentation is available here.

Remote Sensing for Journalists

Satellite data has become an indispensable tool for journalists in gathering information on a variety of topics, including environmental issues, disasters and conflicts. In this webinar, we explored how remote sensing technology can be used to enhance reporting and provide valuable insights into stories that would otherwise be difficult to cover. Our expert Christoph Koettl talked about the latest developments in satellite technology and how it can be used for a range of journalistic applications. The webinar was held on May 25th 2023.

Christoph is a Visual Investigations journalist with the New York Times video team, specializing in the analysis of satellite imagery, video and other visual evidence. He is an expert on armed conflicts, human rights and social media verification. He was part of a team that won the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for international reporting for coverage of the civilian toll of U.S. air and drone strikes.

Open Source Intelligence

The increasing availability of satellite data has made it a fact-checking tool. Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) is information derived from openly available data such as online images and videos, vehicle tracking or remote sensing. OSINT can help verify or refute content from news outlets and social media to support truthful reporting on sensitive issues. In addition, OSINT is increasingly used in court cases related to war crimes and for a broader understanding of conflict situations. This webinar held on June 20th 2023 demonstrated the identification of time and location of events (geolocation and chronolocation) as an operation involving multiple sources of openly available information.

The topic was presented by our special guest Eliot Higgins, founder and creative director of Bellingcat. Bellingcat is an independent, investigative collective of researchers, investigators and citizen journalists that has become one of the best known OSINT organisations. The Bellingcat Team has won the „International News Media Organization of the Year” prize of the Society of Editors in 2022. The film Navalny, produced based on evidence uncovered by Bellingcat, has won the 2022 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

Satellite Data Empowering Environmental NGO Work

How to use Earth Observation data to support communication and action for the environment? - Earth Observation allows anyone to engage with verified, real-time information on many environmental issues. Social media gives users such as non-governmental organizations (NGOs) the opportunity to reach many people with their messages. Crises on a global scale can be illustrated in a compelling way using images and time series of affected locations, supported by a wide range of visualization tools that do not require geo-information skills. At the local level, satellite imagery enables accurate quantification of the temporal and spatial extent of environmental change, which can be used as evidence in legal cases. In addition to the freely available imagery from the Sentinel and Landsat satellites, high-resolution commercial imagery from Planet is also available at an affordable price.

During this 30-minute webinar held live on December 12th 2023, the presenter Andras Zlinszky showed:

  • How to search, find and prepare satellite imagery using free online data and tools to support common environmental issues.
  • How to find time series of satellite imagery to observe change locally, including quantifying magnitude and time.
  • How to access and pay for high-resolution Planet data within Sentinel Hub.
  • How to scale up remote sensing work for an NGO through the ESA Network of Resources Programme and the Planet Nonprofit programme.
