Sentinel 1 EO Products

Sentinel Hub currently supports Sentinel-1 GRD (Ground Range Detected) products only.

We have Sentinel-1 services running on both EOCloud and Amazon AWS, each accessible through their associated URLs and configurators. Currently the capabilities of each service differ. What is available for each service is below.

See the Common Notes chapter below for information about both services including processing information.

AWS:

Data availability:

  • Global archive from January 1, 2017.

Beam modes supported:

  • IW (Interferometic Wide Swath)
  • EW (Extra Wide Swath)

Polarizations:

  • VV + VH
  • HH + HV
  • VV
  • HH

We support products sensed with one of the polarization combinations listed above. Note that some beam mode/polarization combinations will have no data. IW is typically sensed using VV+VH, for example.

Sensing Resolution:

  • Medium
  • High

Similarly to polarization, not all beam mode/polarization combinations will have data at the chosen resolution. IW is typically sensed in High resolution, EW in Medium.

Orbit Direction:

  • Ascending
  • Descending
  • Both

Backscatter Coefficient:

  • Gamma0
  • Sigma0
  • Beta0

Geolocation:

  • Orthorectified
  • Non-orthorectified

Zooming out will use multi-looked sources at an appropriate resolution to your viewing level. You can therefore expect high quality results at all zoom levels.

EOCloud:

Data availability:

  • Complete archive, up-to-date.

Beam modes supported:

  • IW (Interferometic Wide Swath)
  • EW (Extra Wide Swath)

Polarizations:

  • IW: VV+VH
  • EW: HH+HV or HH

Sensing Resolution:

  • IW: High (10m/px)
  • EW: Medium (40m/px)

Backscatter Coefficient:

  • Gamma0

Geolocation:

  • Orthorectified
  • Non-orthorectified

Zooming out will NOT use multi-looked sources. Zooming out is therefore more of a convenience preview as the images will be excessively noisy. If this is an issue consider using the AWS service instead.

Common Notes:

Noise:
All products on both services have thermal noise reduction applied. Product areas with border noise will not be returned.

Backscatter coefficient calculation:
Gamma0 and sigma0 use an ellipsoid earth model. Radiometric terrain flattening is currently not supported.

Custom Scripts and pixel values:
For inputs, use the polarization band name (one of 'VV', 'VH, 'HV', 'HH'). These are the values in your chosen backscatter coefficient and linear. For decibel outputs, for example, a conversion is necessary within your custom script. We offer decibel visualizations in the configurator product templates for your convenience.

EO Browser:
Connects to the EO Cloud service by default, but can connect to the AWS service in advanced search.

Orbit state vectors:
We currently use the orbit state vectors provided in the products themselves as we find these sufficient for GRD use.

Orthorectification:
For orthorectification we use the Mapzen DEM. The non-orthorectified products use a simple earth model as provided in the products themselves. This may be sufficient for very flat target areas and is faster to process.
